La famiglia assurge a notorietà quando, trascorsi pochi decenni di autonomia comunale, la città volle nel 1122 sottrarsi definitivamente all'autorità imperiale e le casate più illustri e potenti del Tortonese, tra cui appunto questa famiglia, consolidando l'ordinamento delle magistrature e relativi poteri giurisdizionali; da ciò l'attributo onorifico di "De Civitate Terdona" ai membri di dette casate.
