Aparece anotado en el expediente de pruebas de nobleza de un caballero de este linaje que ingresó en la Orden de Santiago, que los D. se apellidaron en tiempos antiguos Onis, de lo que se deduce que ambos apellidos son un mismo. Lo confirma la genealogía que ese expediente contiene, en la que el aludido caballero y su padre y abuelo figuran apellidados "D.", así como su madre, que pertenecía a la misma casa, apareciendo, en cambio, apellidado "Onis" el abuelo materno. A más de ésto, en otro expediente de pruebas relativo a un hermano del anterior caballero, tienen el apellido "Onis" el pretendiente y sus antecesores. Ambos hermanos eran carnales e ingresaron en la misma fecha en la Orden de Santiago, y si en sus respectivos expedientes, sin duda incoados a la vez, aparece el uno apellidado D. y el otro Onis, así como su padre y abuelo, clara prueba aporta ese dato de que Onis y D. eran tenidos por un mismo apellido y que fueron usados indistintamente por los miembros de esa familia. El linaje es gallego y quizás originario de la parroquia de Donis (cuyo nombre tomara) del Ayuntamiento de Cervantes y partido judicial de Becerreá, en la provincia de Lugo. Y si esta procedencia puede ser dudosa, no lo es el hecho comprobado de que los Onis o D. tuvieron casa muy principal en la ciudad de Pontevedra.
