Famiglia originaria della Toscana. La tradizione vuole che suo capostipite fosse Bonifazio che tra gli altri figli ebbe Ildebrando monaco, famosissimo con nome di papa Gregorio VIII allorché fu assunto al pontificato (1073-1083). La famiglia fu tra le prime di Firenze e le tombe dei loro membri vedonsi in S. Croce. Il Villani nelle sue cronache dice che anticamente "Poggibonzi" si chiamasse Poggio Bonizi. Le antiche memorie di famiglia vogliono che ciò fosse perché appartenente alla famiglia suddetta. Nel 1500 circa per lotte di partiti la famiglia dovette emigrare a Tolfa (Lazio) dove pose la loro stabile dimora. Il Cav. Egidio, consultore pontificio nel 1840-1860, per la sua munificenza in costrurre edifici sacri in Fabriano per Breve di Gregorio XVI nel 1838.
