Famiglia romana assai antica ed illustre le cui origini sono tuttora avvolte nelle tenebre e discusse e disputate tra la leggenda e le ipotesi storiche. La cognominizzazione, assai remota, dovrebbe derivare dall'antico nome Lollio. una tradizione antichissima pretende che questa famiglia abbia origine dalla gens Lollia, il cui capostipite fu il patrizio Marco Lollio, console nel 21 avanti Cristo come da lapidi conservate dagli attuali rappresentanti. Nel 1191 Giovanni e Bernardo parteciparono alle Crociate per la presa di Cipro e l'anno successivo parteggiarono per i Lusignano. Nel 1198 guerreggiando in Cilicia, Re Amaury concesse a Bernardo, unico superstite, ed alla famiglia, il titolo di conte di Maranta aggiungendo allo stemma le tre teste coronate ed il motto "Moderata durant". Nel 1320 Balduino si imparentò con i Rupen di Pagratide, insediandosi a Roma. Questa famiglia ha dir dello storico Amayden era sicuramente comprese tra quelle raccolte nel Libro d'oro del Campidoglio. Dalla bibliografia documentata sui manoscritti Vaticani, può rilevarsi il numero relativamente esiguo delle memorie riguardanti le famiglie romane. Se si tralasciano le fonti sospette del Ceccarelli, del Fanusio e del Metallino, le cui favole furono in parte accettate dallo Iacovacci, ci rimane il repertorio vastissimo di quest'ultimo. Non esiste, infatti, un Nobiliario romano, ma si trova nell'Archivio Segreto della Santa Sede un importante volume dal titolo "Famiglie ascritte al libro d'oro del campidoglio". Il libro, purtroppo, è andato perduto a causa della malevola azione del tempo; ci rimane solamente l'elenco datoci da Benedetto XIV, nella sua costituzione "Urbem Roman" del gennaio 1746. Fu in base al medesimo che Pio IX, il 2 maggio 1853, ordinò la rinnovazione del "Libro d'Oro", a cura di una congregazione araldica capitolina. L'elenco delle famiglie ascritte al "Libro d'Oro" conservato nell'Archivio Vaticano, é molto esteso poiché abbraccia anche le famiglie patrizie estinte da secoli. La famiglia ebbe nobiltà riconosciuta tra il 1600 e il 1700 anno in cui Teodoro Amayden eseguì le sue ricerche e compose "Ragguaglio di tutte le nobiltà delle famiglie antiche et moderne di Roma... et famiglie straniere".
