Provém esta família de Tristão Gomes de Brito, que se diz ser descendente por linha varonil dos antigos Britos. Foi seu filho Fernão Gomes, nascido em Lisboa a quem o Rei, por morte do Infante D. Henrique, arrendou o contrato de Guiné por cinco anos com a condição que no fim deles daria quinhentas léguas de terras descobertas, além das que já havia, o que ele fez servindo-se de doi capitães, João de Santarém e Pedro de Escovar, ambos cavaleiros da Casa de D.
