Está generalizada la creencia de que este apellido procede de la Montaña de Santander, pero es equivocada. No es linaje netamente montañés, porque tuvo su origen y primitivo solar en el lugar de Pereda (cuyo nombre tomó) de la Merindad de Sotoscueva, partido judicial de Villarcayo y provincia de Burgos. En tiempos antiguos pasó a la de Santander, creando en ella varias casas solares que difundieron el apellido por aquellas montañas, y ésto, sin duda, motivó la errónea creencia a que hemos aludido. También se extendió por las Encartaciones de Vizcaya, y de aquí el error en que igualmente incurren algunos tratadistas al afirmar que este linaje tiene origen vizcaíno. El apellido P., en realidad, es burgalés; y del primitivo solar en el lugar de su nombre (perteneciente, como queda dicho, a la Merindad de Sotoscueva y partido judicial de Villarcayo), dimanaron no solo las ramas que pasaron a la provincia de Santander y Encartaciones de Vizcaya, sino las que, con anterioridad, habían fundado nuevas casas en varias localidades del partido de Villarcayo. Entre esas casas figuran las que radicaron en los lugares de Ornillalastra y de Bedón, de la Merindad de Sotoscueva, y en las villas de Espinosa de los Monteros y de Medina de Pomar, que también pertenecen al partido judicial de Villarcayo. Familias de este apellido residieron también en Madrid, Cádiz y Jerez de la Frontera. A la casa del lugar de Ornillalastra pertenecía en fines del siglo XVI Juan de P. Salinas. ...
