Originaria di Tortona, la famiglia conta fra i suoi ascendenti più illustri quell'Emanuele "de Ponzano de terdoina", dottore in leggi e conte palatino, che ebbe dall'imperatore Carlo VI, il 4 giugno 1365, con patenti datate da Avignone, il privilegio della nobiltà e della milizia aurata. Egli era figlio di Carlone, di Franceshino, di Andreotto, stipite comune del grande ceppo che da Tortona, dove sedeva tra i decurioni, si trasferì e fiorì largamente in Novara.
