Notabile ed antica famiglia veneta, di chiara ed avita virtù, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. L'elevatezza della famiglia è intrinseco nel suo stesso cognome, derivato dalla carica di rettore o reggitore che, già nel medioevo, indicava un pregevole magistrato cittadino, attività probabilmente svolta dal capostipite.
