La famiglia Rivera originata, secondo il Candida, da Pietro di Collimento, capitano dell'imperatore Federico II, e del quale si ha notizia nel testamento della moglie Regale, redatto per notar Giacomo Masciotto il 28 febbraio 1300 e pubblicato nelle prove nell'Ordine di Malta di fra Bonaventura Antonelli nel 1644 e fra Alessandro Alfieri Ossorio nel 1644. Stabilitasi ad Aquila sin dai primi tempi della sua fondazione, ne occupò i più importanti uffici, fra cui quello di camerlengo, riservato ai soli patrizi di detta città. Fu ricevuta per giustizia nell'Ordine di Malta nel 1566 in persona dei fratelli Baldassarre e Scipione. Il primo, pervenuto al grado di sergente maggiore, prese parte alla difesa di Malta contro i turchi. Il secondo combattè nelle galee dell'Ordine, e, fatto prigioniero, fu trucidato in Algeri nel 1570. Fu aggregata alla nobiltà romana nel 1562 e reintegrata il 16 dicembre 1815. Fu aggregata ...

Ascritta alla nobiltà siciliana in diverse città quali Messina, Palermo e Trapani. Si ha memoria di un Luca, senatore in Palermo nel 1530-31; un Giovan Battista, annotato nella mastra nobile del Mollica; un Martino, capitano di giustizia in Trapani nel 1610-11; un dottor Girolamo, con privilegio del 16 maggio 1638, ottenne il titolo di barone di Santa Maria la Cava e, con privilegio del 16 luglio dello stesso anno, quello di barone di Montagnarussa; un Mattia, con privilegio del 16 luglio 1638, ottenne il titolo di barone di San Paolino; un capitano Diego fu castellano in Termini nel 1660.
