Apelido de uso antigo derivado da proeminência desse traço físico, da mesma forma que nasceram outros da mesma natureza como Moreno, Ruivo, Louro, etc. Aqueles que por essa razão assim começaram a ser chamados, transmitiram, posteriormente, essa designação a seus filhos e netos já com a forma de apelido. Assim terão surgido várias famílias não só em Portugal como em Espanha, em cujas Chancelarias, aliás, as armas aqui inicadas foram usadas. Os genealogistas espanhóis não indicam onde tiveram as suas origens mais remotas, salientando, no entanto, que muitos dos Rosado apresentaram provas da antiguidade e nobreza do seu apelido para ingresso nas Ordens de Santiago, Calatrava, Alcántara, e Montesa.
