Heraldic trace of family: Savassi
According to some heraldic reconstruction, the Savassi family is a branch of the noble family Sava from Naples. The Sava family is one of the most ancient and noble of the Amalfi Coast. It is settled there since immemorial time. A Marino, for example, was initially Prefect of Amalfi, then was elected duke or doge of that republic. After him, others of the same family sustained so eminent offices. A Gerardo and a and a Manfredo Sava took part in the First Crusade; Riccardo in 1162 was made grand constable of Apulia and had the county of Fondi. His sons Ruggero and Tancredi were created, the first count of Alba, and the other count of Gravina. Since that time the Sava House always grew in authority and power. Anyway, it seems that in the sixteenth century, a member of the Sava family went in Liguria and there, for reasons not... To be continuedentirely clear but probably due to changes in dialect, his descendants began to use the surname Savassi. Moreover, the Savassi family, since that time, always stands out, thanks to the prominent figures, which gave birth, in the public service, in the liberal and ecclesiastical professions and in the military service. Among these, without undervalue the omitted, we would like to mention: Federico, ligurian landowner, flourishing in 1549; Pietro Antonio, doctor in both laws, flourishing in Genoa, in 1573; Giacomo, canon, theologian and apostolic commissioner, flourishing in 1584; Niccolò, jurisconsult, living in Genoa in 1603; Tommaso, ligurian landowner, flourishing in 1639; Fr Luigi, of the Order of Preachers, flourishing in Chiavari, in 1646; Benedetto, counsellor in Genoa, flourishing in 1683; Carlo Maria, priest of the Congregation of St. Filippo Neri; Giulio, military man, flourishing in Genoa, in 1702; Saverio, Missionary of Chiavari, living in 1719. The existing members of the family descend from Angelino Savassi, of quondam Giacomo (born about September 17, 1856) and of quandam Caterina Olivieri Savassi (born about May 3, 1858), who married Rosina Zille Savassi. Family names so old, without any doubt, honour not only families but also the cities that welcomed them; seems to be, in fact, very worthy the living members of this family which, with much decorum, carry this noble surname, which has had several illustrious members.
