Al dir di alcuni storici, tal casato, discenderebbe dalla nobile famiglia aragonese Sepo, un cui ramo sarebbe giunto in Italia, al seguito dei re Aragonesi, ove, a causa dei soliti fenomeni di pronunzia dialettale e/o di errori di tradizione manoscritta, iniziò a cognominarsi Sepe.
