Famiglia originaria di Piacenza. Un Giovanni Urbano Soprani, dottore collegiato, iscritto nell'Albo Piacentino nel 1470, fu giureconsulto distinto e venne detto il Sapiente. Un Nicolò, insigne giureconsulto, fu inviato dai concittadini in Fiandra presso Alessandro Farnese nel 1587 per chiedere il ripristinamento a Piacenza del Consiglio di Giustizia insediato a Parma; nel 1595 venne nominato con patente ducale commissario generale e visitatore degli Stati di Castro e Ronciglione. I due fratelli Vincenzo e Carlo, ottennero coi loro discendenti maschi, da Ranuccio Farnese, con privilegio del 24 novembre 1678, il titolo di conte. Francesco, figlio di Nicolò (1745-1820), fu chiaro letterato, fu intimo del Giordani, che per lui dettò la seguente iscrizione: "Francesco del Co. Nicolò gentile ingegno ornato di lettere e di facondia nettissimo di superbia e di vilezza tenace del giusto e pietoso a' poveri buono in casa e in città morto sessagenario ai 3 di marzo ...
