Le prime memorie di questa antichissima famiglia risalgono ad un Opizzone, che fu console di Alessandria nel 1191. Conta fra i suoi membri, che già in tempo remoto furono ascritti al decurionato alessandrino, notevoli personaggi, fra i quali merita menzione Giovanni Giacomo, di Lodovico, che fu alfiere nell'esercito imperiale, quindi capitano e successivamente sergente maggiore di una compagnia di fanti al comando dei quali guerreggiò in Lorena. L'imper. Rodolfo II lo nominò generale dell'artiglieria e capitano generale della fortezza di Chiavarino, alla cui difesa morì colpito da una palla nemica il 2 ottobre 1594.
