L'origine di tal cognominizzazione, al dir di autorevoli genealogisti, andrebbe ricercata nel nomen "Aquilius", appartenuto, probabilmente, ad un, oggi ignoto, capostipite. In ogni modo, tal casato, secondo quanto ci viene tramandato, verosimilmente, venne ammesso agli onori ed ai privilegi del cavalierato, in seguito ai fedeli servigi prestati ai Visconti, da un Tommaso AQUILINI, milite sotto i vessilli del signore di Pesaro, Carlo Malatesta, al quale Filippo Maria Visconti, nel 1426, affidò il comando, per contrastare Venezia. Ma, d'altronde, tal famiglia, nel dispiegarsi dei lustri, sempre è riuscita a produrre una serie di uomini che resero illustre il suo nome, nei pubblici impieghi e nel servizio militare.
