Desconhece-se o princípio desta família, cujo apelido pouco se divulgou, mas alguns genealogistas pretendem, pela semelhança do nome, fazê-la originária de Abiul, no actual distrito de Leiria, o que não é crível, porque, se assim fosse, o apelido devería ser precedido da preposição de, por causa da sua proveniência geográfica. A. é palavra árabe que serviu de nome próprio a alguns príncipes marroquinos, um dos quais foi vencido na batalha do Salado. Alguns escritores julgam que deste ou de outro descenda a família A., que é antiga em Portugal. Um dos seus membros foi sepultado na Sé de Lisboa, junto da porta travessa, para o lado do rio, em monumento de pedra encostado á parede do lado da Epístola, com as armas de A. e o seguinte letreiro. "AAbul Aquiz jaz o honrado Lourenço Aabul secretario del Rey nosso senhor e conego nesta see. Asbulis hunc titulum, clarum quem cernis et arma, partem Aquilae, et lunas, tosimul esse putes". Este Lourenço A. foi tambén chantre e cónego da Sé de Évora e de Isabel Martins, mulher solteira, teve um filho chamado Vasco A., legitimado por carta de D, Afonso V, passada em 20-VIII-1477. Talvez este Lourenço descendesse de um Vasco A., homen bom do concelho de Castelo de Vide, que vivia em 1400. Passaram a Castela em tempo de D.
