El noble linaje de Abadal es muy antiguo en Cataluña. Su primitiva casa solar estuvo situada en el término de Avinyó, partido de Manresa. Sus descendientes se establecieron hace unos tres siglos en la ciudad de Vic, en la que siempre disfrutaron de un rango distinguido, desempeñando sus individuos los primeros y más importantes cargos de la misma. En 1783, y en premio de los muchos provechosos servicios prestados por él y por sus antecesores, fue condecorado por el rey Carlos III con el título de "Ciudadano Honrado de Barcelona", don Francisco de Abadal Fontanellas y Pradell, doctor en ambos Derechos, síndico y productor general de la ciudad de Vic y regidor de la misma, cuyo título elevó al segundo grado de nobleza del Principado de Cataluña el rey Carlos IV en 1792, nombrando al referido don Francisco y a todos sus descendientes, por línea de varón, caballeros de Cataluña. El noble linaje de Abadal, que encontró con esclarecidas casas del Principado, ha producido gran número de hombres notables en la Iglesia, en las Letras y en las Armas. Merece ser citado, entre ellos, don Ramón de Abadal y Pou Fontanellas y Pradell, quien, retirado del ejército después de haberse distinguido en las guerras que, a fines del siglo XVIII, sostuvo España con la República Francesa, fue de los primeros en levantar el estandarte de la Independencia frente a las huestes de Napoleón en 1808. ...
