Procede este apellido de un caballero castellano que sirvió al Rey Don Fernando II de León, en la primera reconquista de la villa de Alcántara, de la provincia de Cáceres, en 1166. Tanto se distinguió el aludido caballero en aquella memorable acción, que su Monarca le autorizó para que tomara por armas las mismas de la villa con una ligera variante y usara el nombre de ella por apellido. Descendientes del fundador del linaje crearon casas solariegas en la villas de Atienza, de la provincia de Guadalajara; de Riaza, provincia de Segovia; de Melgar de Fernamental, provincia de Burgos; en otras de la provincia de Toledo, y en la ciudad de Cabra, provincia de Córdoba. Más tarde acabó de extenderse por España el apellido, y pasó a América. De la línea de la ciudad de Cabra fué Pedro de A., natural de Cabra, que casó con doña Catalina Muñoz, de igual naturaleza, y fueron padres de Francisco de A., nacido también en Cabra, que contrajo matrimonio con doña Josefa Portocarrero, natural de Valladolid, e hija de Martín Portocarrero, caballero de Santiago, y de su mujer doña Aldonza Murillo, naciendo de esa unión Juan de A. Portocarrero Muñoz Murillo, natural de Cabra, que ingresó en la Orden de Calatrava en 1698.
