Según la leyenda, el linaje de A. procede del Infante Ludovico A., hijo de A., Rey de Escocia, que pasó a España, entrando al servicio del Rey de Navarra y luego al del Rey de León en la Reconquista, recibiendo en premio a sus hazañas un valle en las montañas de Burgos, que desde entonces se llama de A. En este lugar, que corresponde al partido judicial de Villarcayo, estuvo el solar más antiguo que se conoce del linaje. Una de sus ramas se estableció en Andalucía a la cual perteneció Don Diego Martín de A., fundador de una capellanía en el Hospital de Garachico (Tenerife), Capitán ordinario del Rey Don Felipe II, su Gobernador, Justicia Mayor y Capitán General del Puerto de Caballas, ciudad de Santiago y provincia de San Juan en el Reino de Honduras, por Real Cédula de 15 de Junio de 1577, "en atención a los distinguidos servicios que había prestado a la Corona y por ser persona de gran valor y conocimiento de las cosas de la guerra, capaz de defender aquellos pueblos de los corsarios ingleses y franceses". El Capitán Diego Martín de A. era hijo de Fernando de A. y Doña María de Armas, vecinos de Sevilla.
