En la "Historia de Vizcaya", hasta el año de 1787, por Juan Ramón de Iturriza y Zavala, y continuada desde este año hasta el de 1885 por Manuel de Azcárraga y Régil, se dice en la página 247, en el capítulo XXI, referente a Guizaburunaga, que según escriben Fray Gonzalo de Arredondo, Prior de Boada, y Alfonso de Castilla, citados por J. Iñiguez de Ibargüen en el cuaderno 115, capítulo 52, del libro 2º de la "Crónica General Española", fué Capitán de los vizcaínos contra los franceses, en le siglo X, un caballero llamado Hermengoa, descendiente de los Reyes de Navarra. En la misma obra, capítulo XLI, página 369 se dice (ocupándose del lugar de "Lezama"): "Entre las citadas casas... son memorables... las de Basabil y A., edificadas por Hermeristo y Hermerando, hijos del Capitán Hermengoa en el siglo X". De esto parece deducirse: primero, que Hermengoa era descendiente de los Reyes de Navarra; y segundo que Hermerando, su hijo, fué e que fundó la casa de A. en Lezama, descendiendo, por tanto, los hijos de ese solar, de los Monarcas navarros. En cuanto al valor que se deve dar a estos testimonios, puede haber distintos pareceres. El nuestro es que probablemente influye en ellos lo fabuloso. Se estima más cierto que el apellido que nos ocupa procede de la villa de Arechavaleta (cuyo nombre tomó, y en la que tuvo solar) del partido judicial de Vergara, en Guipúzcoa. ...
