Son varias las casas de este apellido que existieron en las Vascongadas y Navarra. Una de ellas en Vizcaya, a la que se considera fundadora de las restantes, dimanó de una rama del ilustre linaje de Susunaga, originario, a su vez, del de Zamudio y del de Salcedo, porque, algunos de los descendientes de Furtado Sánchez de Zamudio y de su mujer, doña María Ortiz, hija de García Tuerto de Basaurto, de la casa de Salcedo, del que heredó el solar de Susunaga, tomaron el nombre de éste por apellido. Esa rama de Susunaga arraigó en el estrecho Valle de Mendierreca, jurisdicción de Baracaldo y partido judicial de Valmaseda, y tomó por apellido el nombre de A., porque así se llamaba y se llama el sitio que prefirió para establecerse. Algunos autores, hablando en general del apellido A., dicen que procede de un hijo del Rey de Navarra, pero esto lo afirman, sin duda, por ser originaria esta casa vizcaína de A., en la forma que se ha explicado, del linaje de Zamudio, que es el que, según las crónicas, procede de un hijo del Rey navarro. Otra casa de A. radicó en la Valle de Orozco. Debió dimanar de la anterior y dar nombre al barrio de A., que pertenece al Ayuntamiento de Orozco y partido judicial de Bilbao.También hubo casas vizcaína de A., originarias de la de Barcaldo, en la anteiglesia de Ceánuri, del partido judicial de Durango; en la villa de Larrabezúa, del partido judicial de San Sebastián; en la anteiglesia de Libano de Arrieta, del partido judicial de Guernica. ...
