Antica ed illustre famiglia sarda, con residenza in Cagliari, nel quartiere di Stampace, detta Atzeni o Adçeni, le cui prime notizie certe, risalgono agli inizi del XVI secolo. Inizialmente appartenente alla borghesia, alcuni dei suoi membri furono consiglieri del castello durante tutto il sec. XVII ma, nel 1690, ottennero il cavalierato ereditario e la nobiltà con un Agostino che, nel 1698, fu ammesso allo stamento militare, durante il parlamento Montellano. E' possibile che si tratti di quello stesso Agostino, officiale maggiore del Campidano di Oristano, che fu insignito da Carlo II di Spagna del cingolo militare.
