Famiglia originaria delle Marche, ove godette nobiltà ed ottenne il titolo di Conte da Francesco I imperatore d'Austria e vestì l'abito di Malta. Nel sec. XVI un Pellegrino portò la sua famiglia in Terra d'Otranto stabilendosi a Lecce ed in ultimo a Spongano. Un Gennaro si batté valorosamente contro i Turchi nell'esercito dell'imperatore Carlo VI, dal quale ebbe diploma di privilegio. Fu infeudata di varie terre, e nel 1790, per acquisto fatto da Ippazio ebbe il possesso della terra di Castiglione, in Terra d'Otranto, tenuta già dal marchese di Botugno Francesco Castriota legalizzandosi detto acquisto mediante regio assenso del 26 febbraio stesso anno. Nel 1791 fu compresa nella tassa dovuta dai baroni del regno al fisco, per l'incendio della real nave Ruggiero. Nel 1797, mediante disposizione sovrana del 9 luglio, fu ammessa ai reali baciamani e feste di Corte nella persona di Gennaro. Con decreto ministeriale 2 aprile 1889 la famiglia fu riconosciuta nel titolo di nobile e pred. di Castiglione, ed infine, con RR. LL. PP. del 20 maggio 1897 autorizzata ad assumere il titolo di barone sullo stesso predicato. Motto della famiglia: Dignor qua purior. Laus deo. ...
