La Città di Siena in Toscana, che frà le molte sue glorie, con le quali s'è resa famosa fino a più remoti confini del mondo, riconosce quella, che la distingue forse da tutte l'altre dell'universo, per essere stata Madre feconda di tanti Pontefici, non hà però potuto esentarsi da quei pregiudizij, che portano nelli stati, e nelle Città, massime antiche, le frequenti vicende della fortuna. Patì dunque anch'essa gl'incendij, i saccheggi, e revoluzioni, che anno causato mancanza delle scritture, non solamente ne comuni archivij, mà ancora ne particolari, come erano quelli delle Badie, dove oggidì si ritrova qualche memoria antica, ma essendo quelle di Siena andate in commenda, sono restate tutte desolate, e prive delle più riguardevoli memorie.
