Lo stemma descritto trovasi sul castello feudale della famiglia in S. Pietro in Cerro (Piacenza); anteriormente a Francesco I di Francia i triangoli dell'arma erano sostituiti da quadrati. Non si sa se i " De Barateriis" provengono da Genova o da Bologna; li troviamo già a Piacenza sui primi del duecento. Un Guido fu consigliere di Oberto Visconti podestà di Bologna nel 1206 e nei due anni successivi venne eletto podestà di Milano; un altro Guido, canonico di Bruges in Francia, procuratore presso la curia papale di Avignone nel 1342 e nei seguenti anni sotto Giovanni XXII e Clemente VI, e dotò di una cappella la chiesa dei SS. Nazzaro e Celso in Piacenza; Alberigo nello stesso tempo si trovò alla corte pontificia come giureconsulto e presso quella ebbe incarico di sostenere le ragioni di Rogerio vescovo di Piacenza Un Antonio, giureconsulto valente, insegnò nello studio di Piacenza dal 1398 ...
