In Italia, ma anche in Dalmazia, fu spesso trascritta come Battisti. Vuolsi in realtà che la famiglia fosse di origine veneta e solo dopo giunta in Dalmazia. Per comprendere l'uso così diffuso del patronimico "ch" va precisato che la Chiesa dalmata, che controllava l'anagrafe, era formata in prevalenza da sacerdoti slavi che avevano adottato l'uso di aggiungere una "ch" finale al cognome originario del padre. La "ch" stava a significare "figlio di" e si leggeva c(i) perché i veneziani scrivevano chiesa e chiodo e leggevano "ciesa" e "ciodo".
