Nobility crown Bernardini Della MassaBy means of a diploma dated 22 Sept. 1503, Guido Ubaldo I Duke of Urbino, creating a knight Martino di Lorenzo da Sansepolcro (Arezzo), granted him and his successors in perpetuity the lordship of the Massetta with the villas of Pagno, Tivo and Casalecchio, lordship which was then exercised from the family with count title. From this investiture originated the custom of adding the suffix "della Masetta" or "della Massa" to the family name; indeed over time this custom became so general that the feudal predicate ended up replacing the surname, and a sentence of the Forlì court on 31 July was necessary. 1909 and another of that of Brescia on 20 Oct. to authorize the use of the double surname in place of the latter alone.
