The family had its main residence in the cities of Florence and Pontremoli. Two branches of the family were admitted separately to the Pontremoli nobility in 1781: the branch represented by the lawyer Niccolò di Pietro Giovanni Bologna, and the one represented by Count Giacomo Bologna; the latter presented the coat of arms with the dog's heads turned. The title of count had been granted to the family by the Duke of Parma Francesco Maria Farnese, in the early 18th century.
