Questa famiglia, originaria di Menaggio sul Lago di Como, si trasferì a Lucca nel sec. XIV, e qui ebbe molta parte nel governo e nelle vicende cittadine. Pietro (1489-1521), appartenne al Consiglio generale nel 1514 e fu riconosciuto "nobile dalla nascita" insieme coi discendenti, come risulta dalle patenti di nobiltà rilasciate dalla Repubblica di Lucca in data dell'8 maggio 1699 e 7 aprile 1781. Giovanni di Antonio, Bottino, Bernardino e Vincenzo di Giovanni furono anziani della città nel sec. XVI. Prospero (1572-1622), ricco mercante in Anversa, prestò alla Corona di Spagna, per le guerre di Fiandra, ingenti somme non potute mai ripetere.
