La famiglia, una delle primarie e più insigni della città di Arezzo, ove, nel 1345, trovasi annotata tra i magnati, ha occupato fino dai più antichi tempi un posto eminente nella vita cittadina. Matteo Villani nel libro secondo della sua Cronica racconta che nel 1351 in un scontro furioso tra Pier Saccone Tarlati e la cavalleria di Perugia "usciti d'Arezzo i Brandagli, che allora erano i maggiori cittadini, intesono a campare messer Piero, con gli altri prigioni che i cavalieri di Perugia avevan ritenuti", al che riuscirono bravamente; e in un strumento di pace stipulato l'anno 1353 tra l'arcivescovo di Milano da una parte e la città di Firenze, Perugia, Siena ed Arezzo dall'altra, troviamo fra i seguaci dell'arcivescovo Giuduccio "cum suis subitis et adhaerentibus". I B. possedevano, oltre che nella città, anche nel contado, ove nel 1301 avevano acquistato la metà del castello di Cole nella Valle del Cerfone e nel 1443 il Castello di Colle nella Valle del Cerfone, e nel 1433 il Castello di Ranco con le sue giurisdizioni ed appartenenze. Abilitati ai primi onori fino dal 1385, ebbero priori e gonfalonieri di giustizia incominciando da Pier Giovanni di Neri nel 1477; e furono ascritti al patriziato aretino con decreto 8 marzo 1756.
