Descendem de Wilhelm van der Bruyn ou Guilherme de B., como em Portugal se chamou, o qual nasceu em Maestriche e passou no último quartel do século XV à ilha da Madeira, onde casou e teve geração, que se remificou por várias ilhas do arquipélago açoriano, designadamente no Faial, originando-se aí os Brunos da Silveira, Terras Bruns, Bruns do Canto, Cunhas Bruns e outros ramos ilustres. Na ilha Terceira também os Bruns se aparentaram con as principais famílias, tais como Bettencourts, Cantos, Cavalhais, Meneses, Noranhas, Pereiras e Pains. Dos Açores (Canto Brum): família descendente, por legítima varonia, de Jácome Dias Correia, cidadão do Porto, que passou á ilha de S. Miguel, Açores, na primeira metade do séc. XV, onde instituiu um importantíssimo morgado, tendo casado com Brites Rodrigues Raposo (filha de Rui Vaz Gago, natural de Beja, e de Catarina Gomes Raposo) e faleceu em 1542. Deste casal foi 5º neto André Dias da Câmara e Medeiros (f. na freg. matriz de Ponta Delgada a 8.8.1713), cavaleiro professo na o. de Santiago, que casou com D. Isabel do Canto e Faria (filha herdeira de António de Faria e Maia, capitão-mór da vila da Lagoa, cavaleiro da o. de Cristo, e mulher D. Luisa do Canto), sendo 4.º avós de José do Canto, (20.11.1820-18.7.1898), presidente da Junta Geral de Ponta Delgada, autor da "Collecçao Camoneana", e um dos maiores proprietários desta ilha, que casou com D. Maria-Guilhermina Taveira Brum da Silveira ...
