Todos los apellidos similares de esta familia son modalidades de un mismo linaje originario de Francia, según el testimonio de mosén Jaime Febrer, y radicado en Cataluña desde tiempos muy antiguos, tanto que el doctor Menescal manifiesta que tuvo su raíz en la citada región española. De Cataluña pasó el apellido a Aragón y a Valencia, y uno de sus primeros y esclarecidos varones que cita la historia es Pedro C., que sirvió al rey Jaime I de Aragón en la conquista de Valencia, recibiendo muchos premios de este monarca cuando tomó posesión de la citada ciudad. Quedó en Valencia establecido el mencionado caballero y fue jurado de ella en el año de 1376. Sus descendientes fueron creciendo en hacienda y autoridad, siendo familia de mucho lustre cuando comenzó a reinar don Alfonso V de Aragón, al que ayudaron eficazmente los de este linaje en la conquista del reino de Nápoles.
