Antichissimo casato toscano, di origine longobardo, il quale ebbe il titolo di Conte di Pistoia e di Fucecchio, da un cui ramo, al dir del Passerini, si originarono i celeberrimi Bonaparte. In documento, conservato nell'Archivio di Stato di Firenze, del 15 maggio 1235, redatto a Fucecchio, infatti, si rinviene che un certo Jamfaldus di Firenze avrebbe fatto, per sé e per la sua famiglia, una donazione all'ospedale di Rosaia. Come figlio di Jamfaldus viene nominato un "Willielmo qui nuncupatur Bonaparte", e come fondatore dell'ospedale il gran conte Ugo Cadolingi, un antenato (abavus) di Jamfaldo. L'origine di tal cognominizzazione, al dir di illustri genealogisti, andrebbe ricercato nel nome del capostipite, ovvero il conte Cadolo, morto intorno al 988.
