Si originò in Genova la nobile famiglia Cafarotti o Caffarotto. Nel corso dei secoli, la casata diramò in diverse regioni italiane. L'origine di tal cognominizzazione, secondo quanto ci viene tramandato, andrebbe ricercata in un Caffaro, patrizio costantinopolitano fiorente 1065, il quale viene identificato con il capostipite. In Genova la famiglia si distinse grazie ai pregevoli personaggi che da essa trassero i natali: un Caffaro fu illustre scrittore degli annali di Genova; un Uberto, nel 1135, ed un Guiscardo, nel 1136, furono consoli; Melchiorre fu capitano dell'armata contro i Pisani e console della repubblica; un Rinaldo fu console nel 1183; un Agostino fu ambasciatore al Duca di Milano, nel 1476, anziano nel 1480 e nel 1488; Ambrogio sedette tra i Padri del Comune 1522.
