Famiglia oriunda di Cangiaso nella valle della Polcevera (Liguria) e probabilmente discendente dalla stirpe patrizia genovese e dogale dei Cambiaso, che alzò lo stesso stemma degli Scaligeri di Verona, come si vede scolpito sulla tomba di Bernabò Cambiaso (dec. 1330) nella chiesa di S. Cipriano a cinque miglia da Genova. Carlo Gaetano, di Giovan Battista, di Carlo (nato a Firenze il 13 febbraio 1724, dec. 1795), fu il primo della famiglia a stabilirsi definitivamente in Toscana e ad usare il cognome C. invece di quello originario di Cambiaso. Egli ottenne l'ascrizione alla cittadinanza fiorentina, al libro detto "del 200".
