Dice el Padre Morote que la palabra Cánovas es corrupción de la de Calanovas. Los caballeros que así se apellidaron fueron buenos hijosdalgo, y en el libro de la población de Lorca figuran Pedro y Fernando C., cuyos descendientes pasaron a poblar luego a Totana y otros puntos de la región. De las arma de este linaje dió testimonio en Lorca, en 15 de Julio de 1557, el escribano del Rey, Francisco Sánchez Valdés, a pedimento de Miguel y Pedro de C., vecinos de dicha ciudad. Eugenio Antonio de C. y Blázquez de Avila, vecino de Huéscar (Granada), casó en 1790 con doña Juana Josefa Urrutia de la Serna, natural de Vélez Rubio (Almería). De la misma ciudad de Huéscar procedió Joaquín de C. Buendía, casado también en Vélez Rubio con doña Encarnación Carrasco y Carrasco. De estos dos matrimonios descienden los C. de Vélez. En Málaga moró otra familia de este apellido, a la que perteneció el ilustre político D. Antonio C. del Castillo, que tanto influyó en los destinos de nuestra Patria y se distinguió en todas las disciplinas del saber humano. ...
