Caprello è il primo nome certo di questa famiglia, per il quale i discendenti furono chiamati De Capra o de Caprellis. Umberto nel 1172 pose leggi alla villa di Carrè di cui i suoi antenati ebbero piena giurisdizione concessa loro dagli imperatori germanici. Eretta in contea la villa Carrè, i Capra furono fregiati del titolo di Conti. L'imperatore Perdinando III con diploma 24 Febbraio 1648 concedette il titolo di Marchese ad Odorico Capra. Numerosi autori della famiglia descrissero eventi e personaggi, attribuirono ad essa varie origini senza alcuna valida attestazione. La moderna critica storica ha, sulla scorta sicura dei documenti, fatto ragione delle artificiose ricostruzioni genealogiche di quegli scrittori che, per compiacente spirito d'adulazione, pretesero far discendere questa famiglia da nobili e antiche prosapie come quella di altre famiglie.
