Antiguo linaje, originario de las Vascongadas. Su primitivo solar radicó cerca de la ciudad de Vitoria (quizá en el lugar de C., cuyo nombre está, sin duda, relacionado con el del linaje), y tuvo en señorío los lugares y tierras de Quincoces, que hoy pertenecen a la Junta de Oteo (partido judicial de Villarcayo y provincia de Burgos) y se hallan próximos a la raya de Álava. Hemos encontrado muy pocas y vagas noticias acerca del principio del apellido. Pasó en tiempos muy pretéritos a Vizcaya, Santander, la Rioja y Navarra, y sábese que en las Asturias de Santillana (Santander) y en la ciudad de Estella (Navarra) hubo dos antiguas casas de este linaje. Entre los varones más antiguos e ilustres del solar de C. figuran Gutierre García de C., Capitán en tiempos del Rey Don Ramiro I, y Rui García de C., que asistió a la batalla de las Navas de Tolosa. Hay testimonios que afirman que el primero de esos caballeros fué el fundador de la casa del apellido Cárcova (que es una corrupción del de Cárcamo), en el barrio del mismo nombre del lugar de Santa María de Miera, provincia de Santander. Don Francisco Fernández de Béthencourt dice que de la casa de Estella procedió la rama de Andalucía, cuyo florecimiento arranca desde la época de la conquista de Córdoba. En esta ciudad fué heredado y quedó establecido el progenitor de dicha rama, de la que se conoce a: Fernán Iñiguez de C., natural de Estella (Navarra), y su hermano, el famoso Comendador de Santiago Rodrigo Fernández de C. ...
