Se apellidaron así algunos descendientes del linaje Cardo, originario, a su vez, del de Otáñez, que tuvo su cuna en los lugares de Otáñez, de Santullán y de Sámano, del Ayuntamiento de Castro-Urdiales (Santander). Ese linaje Cardo pasó a Vizcaya y fundó nuevos solares en Somorrostro y en Baracaldo (Bilbao). Otra familia apellidada G. Cardo, es de origen asturiano y procede del lugar de Cardo, perteneciente al Ayuntamiento de Gozón y partido judicial de Avilés. Tomó por apellido el nombre del lugar de su procedencia, uniéndolo al patronímico García. Así lo demuestran las pruebas de nobleza de José G. Cardo, que ingresó en la Orden de Santiago, aprobadas el 10 de Septiembre de 1708. De sus informaciones resulta que Domingo G. Cardo, natural de Cardo, casó con doña Catalina Sanz de las Arenas, y fueron padres de Domingo G. Cardo, llamado el Viejo, bautizado en el repetido lugar de Cardo, del Ayuntamiento de Gozón, el 15 de Julio de 1581, que fué inscrito como hijodalgo en 1608 y 1619. Testó el 3 de Mayo de 1648, año de su fallecimiento. Había contraído dos matrimonios; en primeras nupcias con doña Inés Álvarez de Nieva, fallecida en Cardo el 4 de Abril de 1626 (hija de Juan Álvarez Buylla, natural de Nieva en Santa Leocadia de Laviana, que testó el 17 de Agosto de 1622, hijodalgo en 1608, y de doña Ana García Robés, hermana de don Bartolomé), y en segundas con otra señora asturiana, cuyo nombre desconocemos. ...
