Fu signora della sua patria per circa un secolo. Nel 1314 Giacomo I fattosi capo di una fazione popolare cacciò in bando i magistrati, e nel 1318 si fece capo della repubblica. Ebbe a combattere contro Cane della Scala, signor di Verona. Marsilio, nipote del precedente, trasferì il dominio della città a Cane della Scala, ma lo ricuperò coll'aiuto dei Fiorentini e dei Veneziani nel 1337. Ubertino III principe di Padova, morì nel 1345; Marsilietto non regnò che due soli mesi; Giacomo II morì assassinato nel 1350; Giacomino fu acclamato signore della patria, ma per opera del suo nipote Francesco cessò di vivere in una fortezaza nel 1372.
