Nobility crown CastroÉ uma das maiores e mais antigas famílias de Espanha, que provém de D. Fruela, Rei das Astúrias, cujo bisneto por varoni, Lain Calvo, Senhor de Bívar, foi eleito pelos Castelhanos para ser um dos juízes que os governaram, condição a que alude a carta de fundação do Mosteiro de Santa Maria de Aguilar del Campo, de 25-II-981, e a de confirmação de terras à Ordem de Sant'Iago no ano de 953, feita pelo mesmo soberano. Recebeu-se com D. Teresa ou Elvira Nunes, filha de Nuno Rasura, também juiz eleito pelos povos de Castela, e teve, entre outros filhos, a Fernão Laines, a quem se refere a doação que o Rei D. Fruela fez ao Apóstolo Sant'Iago, de duas léguas de terra, a 29-VI-972.Povoou Haro e Rioja e foi pai de Lain Calvo, que vivia no ano de 946, o qual, casando-se com D. Argôncia, filha de Iñigo Fortunes, senhor de Biscaia, e neta do Duque D. Fortum, teve o Conde Nuno Laines. Seu bisneto, o Conde D.Alvaro Fernandes, herdou de seu bisavô materno o Senhorío de Castro Xerez, passando a chamar-se de Castro.Sua filha herdeira, D.Maria de Castro, casou com o Infante de Navarra, D.Fernando, filho do rei D.Sancho I de Aragão,cuja ilustríssima descendência se dividiu em dois grandes ramos: o dos de 13 arruelas e o dos de 6 arruelas. Dos primeiros, Senhores das Vilas de Lemos e Sárria, vêm em Espanha os Condes de Lemos, recaídos nos Duques de Alba, e em Portugal,os Condes de Rezende, os de Basto, os de Nova Goa, etc.Dos segundos vêm os Condes de Monsanto e Marqueses de Cascais, os Melo e Castro,Condes das Galveias, os descendentes do grande Vice-rei da India, D.João de Castro,e outras ilustres casas.
