Il primo, ovvero quelli dei Cavaglia o Cavaglià è un'antichissima famiglia signorile dei conti di Cavaglià, divisa in numerose stirpi, la quale risulta fregiata dei titoli di: conti di Cavaglià; signori di Alice, Andorno e Bioglio, Caresana, Casanova, Frassineto, Montosolo, Roppolo, Ticineto, Valmacca; consignori di Borgaro Torinese. L'erudita medioevalista Ferdinando Gabotto fa derivare tal famiglia dal Conte Aimone di Vercelli (già + 987). I membri di tal illustre famiglia, nel 1173 si dichiaravano vassalli del vescovo di Vercelli e furono certamente coinvolti nel conflitto fra i Comuni di Vercelli e Ivrea, che durò dal 1221 al 1231, e parteggiarono probabilmente per Ivrea.
