Antica famiglia nobile della Liguria, detta originariamente Cazella, stabilitasi nel castello omonimo in quel di Montoggio già dal XII secolo, se ne hanno notizie sin dal 1173, quando un membro della famiglia fu tra i firmatari di un Trattato di alleanza con il Marchese di Massa; capostipite fu Ansaldus, del quale si hanno notizie documentate dal 1185. La famiglia, che godette nobiltà sin dai tempi più antichi, venne poi ad abitare a Genova da Rapallo nell'anno 1360; fu Casata di armatori, soldati ed ecclesiastici, diede alla Chiesa due Vescovi e partecipò sempre al Governo della Repubblica. Corrado fu Anziano nel 1368; Giovanni nel 1386, 1394, 1404; Luchino nel 1397. Numerosi altri ebbero lo stesso ufficio ed altre cospicue cariche nel secolo XV; Batta, nel 1494, fu ambasciatore della Repubblica presso il Duca Ludovico di Milano; Bernardo nel 1506, Desiderio nel 1523 e Nicolò nel 1527 furono Anziani.
