Antica ed assai nobile famiglia, discesa dalla Bretagna, la quale, col favore della casata Colonna, si imparentò in Viterbo. Stanziatasi in Vicenza, fu aggregata a quella nobiltà nel 1452 benché già dal 1300 appartenesse al nobile Collegio dei Notai. Anticamente detta dei Gatti, si narra che l'attuale cognominizzazione, Chieregato, Chieregati o Chiericati, discenda dal seguente grazioso aneddoto: Camillo, di Gregorio, era stato nominato a tre sedi vescovili, di Camerino, di Melisi e di Novara: in cambio però di cingersi la fronte della mitra episcopale pensò bene di congiungersi in matrimonio; e volendo conservar la memoria della sua triplice elezione a vescovo, adottò il cognome di Chieregati e prese per arma tre teste d'uomo, con la chierica.
