Ursprünglich aus dem gleichnamigen Ort im ligurischen Apennin in der Nähe von Savignone stammend, war es bereits im 14. Jahrhundert bekannt: In der Urkunde über die Herrschaft über den dritten Teil der Lehen des Finales folgte Im Jahr 1370 wird Raffaele Clavarezza als Ältester gefunden. Tatsächlich zog die Familie genau Ende des 14. Jahrhunderts nach Genua und ihre Mitglieder bekleideten dort mehrmals öffentliche Ämter.
