Nobility crown CodaE' opinione assai accreditata che i membri della famiglia, diffusi nel Piemonte e nel Veneto, derivino da un conte di Savoia. Verso il mille costoro vivevano a Savona, ed appartennero alle magistrature cittadine; ebbero inoltre famosi navigatori. La famiglia è stata chiamata anche Cauda; imparentata coi del Carretto, possedette una parte del feudo di Gravere, nel mandamento di Susa intorno il 1663. Questo ramo fu investito del titolo comitale il 17 febbraio 1722, e poi quello dei conti di Casalette. Nel Veneto abitavano fin dal 1299, nel quale anno il veneziano Giovanni subì alcune rappresaglie da parte dei milanesi. In questa faccenda intervenne la Repubblica, e così pure, per altre ragioni commerciali, che il suddetto Coda aveva (1311) nella Sciampagna.
