João I, ou em seus filhos Vasco Anes C.-Real, Gil Vaz da Costa e Afonso Vaz da Costa, que também o usaram transmitindo-se à descendência dos dois primeiros, pois do terceiro não consta que a houvesse. Informam alguns autores genealógicos que Vasco Anes C.-Ral, criado e valido de D. Duarte, dele recebeu o apelido por ser muito agasalhador de pessoas, dizendo o mesmo Príncipe que a sua corte era real quando nela estava Vasco Anes. Foi alcaide-mor de Tavira e Silves, fronteiro-mor do Algarve, o primeiro que desembarcou em Ceuta com o Infante e que entrou na porta de Almina. Outros autores dizem que veio o apelido a Vasco Anes de Costa, seu pai, por este oferecido a D. João I para ir ao desafio dos Doze de Inglaterra e que, deste acontecimento, juntara às armas dos Costas a cruz vermelha, a qual trazia no escudo o cavaleiro inglês com quem se batera. Parece mais natural que o apelido tenha começaco em Vasco Anes da Costa e os filhos o recebessem dele do que haver principiado em Vasco Anes, seu filho, e deste o tomassem os irmãos. ...
