Apelido de grande antiguidade não só em Portugal e Espanha como também em Itália onde a história deste apelido é tratada pelo genealogista Andrea d'Isernia desde o reinado de Carlos I de Nápoles, apontando-lhe como Armas um escudo em tudo semelhante ao aqui usado, dele diferindo apenas no número de corvos que lá era apenas um enquanto aqui são três, como se verifica no Livro do Armeiro-Mor finalizado em 1509. Os autores peninsulares fazem derivar os Corvos, da velha linhagem medieval dos Curvo, já tratada nas mais antigas cónicas nobiliárquicas, os Livros Velhos de Linhagens. Nestes se mencionam D.Payo Curvo, fidalgo da Galiza, e seu filho D.Gonçalo Paes Curvo, de quem descenderia Mem Curvo, Senhor do Castelo de Lanhoso nos reinados de D.Sancho II e D.Afonso III, que casou com D.Maria Pires de Vide, de quem deixou ilustre descendência que teria passado a usar as diferentes formas de Curvos ou Corvos. Entre ela estariam os Curvos Semmedos, família de que se destacaram os irmãos José Joaquim e Bruno Granate Curvo Semmedo que tiveram Cartas de Brasão em 1778 e 1784. Quanto aos Corvo, fixaram-se sobretudo em Beja, Almodôvar, Alcácer do Sal e outras terras alentejanas onde possuíram vários Vínculos e Morgadios, como sucedeu aos Andrade Corvo, de que se salientou o célebre escritor João de Andrade Corvo, Deputado e Ministro novecentista, ou os Corvos Freires, um dos quais, o Tenente João Arrobas Corvo Freire de Magalães, fez Justificação da sua Nobreza, para obtenção de Brasão, durante o reinado de D.João VI.
