Provengono da Fiesole e scesero in Firenze dopo la distruzione della loro patria sulla fine del secolo XI. Nella nuova residenza occuparono presto una posizione distinta e con Naddo di Jacopo, nel 1393, cominciarono a dare priori alla Repubblica. Nel corso del tempo, ebbero 24 priori e 6 Gonfalonieri e, durante il principato mediceo, vari senatori. Giovanni Guasco, priore e poi gonfaloniere, coprì la carica di ufficiale sopra le fortezze del Comune e nel 1345 ricevette a nome della Repubblica la sottomissione dei Conti di Battifolle.
