Sabe-se que o Imperador Carlos V deu armas em 1530 a Guilherme van C. e que seu neto, Pedro C., natural da mesma cidade, veio para Portugal, estabelecendo-se em Lisboa no ano de 1592. Foi impressor notável e discípulo do celebérrimo Cristóvão Plantino, de Antuérpia, e foi o fundador duma dinastia de impressores, muito ilustres, que nos séculos XV e XVI trabalharam brilhantemente em Portugal. Estabeleceu uma oficina tipográfica que imprimiu obras muito estimadas pela beleza do trabalho. Teve or foro de cavaleiro da Casa Real a 25-X-1617 e o privilégio de impressor régio por alvará de 28-V-1620. As obras que imprimiu têm as datas compreendidas entre 1597 e 1632. Recebeu-se com Susana Domingues de Beja, filha de João Domigneus de Beja ou de Antuérpia e de sua mulher, Catarina Gomes Pacheco, de quem teve diversos filhos que seguiram o apelido C., devendo o casamento ter-se efectuado em 1599 ou anteriormente.
